Refugee status

Comisión Nacional para los Refugiados, CONARE · Official name: Reconocimiento de la condición de refugiado (Ley 26.165, reglamentada por Decreto 646/2025)

People who left their country because of a well-founded fear of persecution (1951 Convention) or because their life, freedom or safety was threatened by events in the 1984 Cartagena Declaration can ask the National Commission for Refugees (CONARE) for refugee status. The claim is free. Claimants get a provisional document, renewed every 90 days, which lets them obtain a CUIL to work. Recognised refugees get a 2-year temporary residence, a DNI and, if they want, a Convention travel document.
