Visitor visa (subclass 600) – Tourist stream (apply outside Australia), with ETA (subclass 601) and eVisitor (subclass 651) for eligible passports

Australia has no visa-free entry for tourists apart from New Zealand citizens: every visitor needs a visa before travelling. Holders of certain passports (mainly Europe, North America and parts of East Asia) can get an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app or a free eVisitor (subclass 651) online, each allowing stays of up to 3 months per entry over 12 months. Everyone else applies online through ImmiAccount for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream, which costs AUD 250 from outside Australia (from 1 July 2026) and is usually granted for a stay of 3 months, up to 12 months in some cases.

Who it’s for

People who want to holiday in Australia, go on a cruise, or visit family and friends. ETA and eVisitor cover only listed passports; all other nationalities use the subclass 600 Tourist stream.

Eligibility

  • Which route applies to you

Your passport decides the route: ETA (601), eVisitor (651), or subclass 600 Tourist stream for all other nationalities.

    • ETA (601): only passports on Home Affairs' ETA list
    • ETA examples: Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, USA
    • UK British citizens and several EU states are also on the ETA list
    • eVisitor (651): EU and some other European passports
    Official wording

ETA (601) is open only to passports on Home Affairs' ETA list (for example Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, USA, UK British citizens, and several EU states). eVisitor (651) is open to EU and some other European passports. All other nationalities apply for the subclass 600 Tourist stream.

  • Genuine visitor

You must intend only to stay temporarily and to obey the visa conditions and stay period. Home Affairs looks at your circumstances and reasons to return home.

  • Enough money

You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself in Australia (and, for eVisitor, to leave at the end of your stay). No fixed amount is published.
