Asylum (refugee status) application in Israel
Official name: Handling of political asylum seekers in Israel (PIBA Procedure 5.2.0012)
Israel decides refugee claims itself through the Population and Immigration Authority's Refugee Status Determination (RSD) Unit. Claims start with a detailed online form in English and should be lodged within a year of entering Israel. The RSD Unit interviews applicants and makes written recommendations to an advisory committee; the Minister of Interior decides. Recognised refugees receive an A/5 temporary residence permit for one year. Refusals can be appealed to the Appeals Tribunal, then the District Court. Some nationalities are handled in fast-track procedures.
