Overstayed in Japan: the departure order system
A person who has overstayed and goes to immigration of their own accord, meaning to leave quickly, may be able to leave without detention under a departure order. The order sets a deadline of no more than 15 days. Re-entry is generally barred for 1 year. Reporting to immigration does not by itself end the overstay.
