Tolerated stay (Duldung) and residence permits for people without valid status in Germany
A Duldung is a suspension of deportation, not a residence permit. The duty to leave stays in place. People who have been tolerated for years can apply for a residence permit if they meet the conditions of section 25a (young people) or section 25b (sustained integration). The former opportunity residence (Chancenaufenthaltsrecht, section 104c) now only has a transitional rule for people who already hold it.
