Tourist or traveller visit
visa-exempt entry, consular visa or IGM 'visa consultada'
Guatemala's migration institute (IGM) sorts nationalities into categories. Some can enter on a passport alone, some need a consular visa from a Guatemalan embassy, and Category C nationals need a 'visa consultada' that a Guatemalan sponsor (garante) files with IGM in Guatemala. Guatemala is part of the CA-4 area with El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, so the stay granted at the first CA-4 entry covers all four countries. A tourist stay can be extended at IGM before it runs out.

Check your nationality's category
IGM publishes a country classification (exempt, consular visa, or visa consultada). The category decides whether you need a visa and where to apply.

- A Guatemalan garante must file the visa consultada in person at IGM's Subdirección de Extranjería with an up-to-date garante certificate.
- The form asks for the garante's monthly income equal to five minimum wages.
- One garante cannot back more than three tourist visa requests at once, unless they are close family.
