Family reunification
reagrupamento familiar
A non-EU national with a valid Portuguese residence permit can ask AIMA (the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) to recognise the right to family reunification for their spouse, partner and children. For family members abroad, the sponsor applies to AIMA first; after a favourable decision, the family member applies for a residence visa for family reunification at a Portuguese consulate. The family member then receives a residence permit lasting as long as the sponsor's.
